When Stephen and Beverley approached us, they needed more than just a kitchen renovation. With Beverley in a wheelchair and two rambunctious dogs underfoot, their existing closed-off, cramped space simply didn’t work.
This project demanded delivering on many fronts – increasing light, allowing wheelchair access, accommodating pets, and actually functioning as a kitchen. To achieve their goals, we removed the old conservatory door and window, installing internal bi-fold doors instead. This opened up the space, flooding it with light and improving accessibility. When selecting flooring and doors, we chose large format porcelain tiles and a flush door track to minimize bumps that Stephen would feel in his wheelchair.
For the kitchen itself, we opted for durable slab cabinets in a hardwearing, “healing” Serica door that withstands scrapes and scuffs from wheelchairs and pets. The easy-clean white quartz counters, wipe-down doors, and minimal grout lines ensure low maintenance.
The end result is a kitchen tailored to this family’s unique needs – bright, accessible, and pet-friendly. We eliminated obstacles and selected resilient materials suitable for Stephen’s wheelchair, providing him full freedom of movement in the space. Now the entire family, furry members included, can enjoy their kitchen together.
